A native of Tampa, Florida, Fr. Dawson earned his Juris Doctor with honors from the University of Florida in 1987. For many years thereafter he practiced as a partner in the trial department of the firm of Macfarlane Ferguson & McMullen in Tampa, Florida. His practice led to frequent invitations to speak on the subjects of legal and medical ethics and professional liability issues. During this time, Penn was also active in Sacred Heart Parish, where he met the Jesuits. In 2005 the parish sponsored Penn for ordination to the permanent deaconate in the diocese of Saint Petersburg, Florida. While studying for the permanent deaconate he recognized a calling to the religious life and to the Society of Jesus. In 2009, he entered the Jesuit Novitiate in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. During the two-year novitiate, Penn worked as a missionary in Guyana, South America; a L’Arche volunteer in Mobile, Alabama; a theology teacher at Rockhurst Jesuit High School in Kansas City, Missouri; a Volunteer Chaplain at Evins Juvenile Detention Center in Edinburg, Texas; and, in the homeless shelter of Saint Xavier Church near Union Square in New York City. After professing first vows as a Jesuit in 2011, Penn earned a Master of Arts in philosophy from Loyola University Chicago where he also served as a volunteer chaplain at Stroger-Cook County Hospital. Upon completing his degree in Chicago, he was missioned as a visiting professor of law at Loyola University in New Orleans where he taught Torts, Legal Philosophy, and Professional Ethics. While at Loyola New Orleans he also assisted in campus ministry. During the summer of 2017, Penn taught a course on Saint Ignatius and Ignatian spirituality for a group of Loyola New Orleans students in Rome and served as a deacon at Holy Name Church on the Loyola New Orleans campus. In 2018 Penn completed his Bachelor of Theology and Master of Divinity degrees with highest honors at Regis College, the Jesuit theological school affiliated with the University of Torontothrough the Toronto School of Theology in Canada. While in Canada, Penn served as a transitional deacon at St Peter’s Parish in Toronto. After ordination and completing a pastoral year in the missions of southern Belize, Penn returned to teaching at Loyola’s law school. In addition to teaching, Fr.
