WOMEN OF MANRESA - SILENT WOMEN'S RETREAT
Theme: The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola
Presenter: Fr. Frank Reale, S.J.
The oldest of three brothers, Fr. Frank Reale, S.J. was born in St. Louis, Missouri where in grade school he was taught by the School Sisters of Notre Dame before moving on to St. Louis University High. It was there that he was first introduced to Jesuits and where he began to discern Jesuit priesthood as a vocation. He graduated from “SLUH” in 1969. After two undergrad years at Saint Louis University, he entered the Jesuit novitiate in 1971, then located in Kansas City. After pronouncing first vows in 1973, his Jesuit training included a philosophy degree from Saint Louis University (with other majors in English and Spanish), graduate work in American Studies at the University of Minnesota, a teaching stint (English and history) at Rockhurst High in Kansas City, and four years in London, England, where he studied theology while living and ministering in a Jesuit parish. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1981. Father Reale’s first apostolic assignment as an ordained Jesuit took place at St. Louis University High where he taught theology and coordinated the school’s pastoral and service programs.
A 15-year stretch in Jesuit administration followed, beginning with three years as the province’s vocation director, and then six years as the provincial’s assistant for secondary education and assistant for Jesuits in formation. From 1997-2003 he served as provincial of the Missouri Province of the Jesuits. In 2004 Father Reale was assigned to Saint Louis University where he served as that institution’s Vice President for Mission and Ministry and as chaplain to the School of Law. In May of 2008, the University’s President asked him to move to Spain where for 3 years he was the chief administrator of Saint Louis University’s campus in Madrid while remaining as VP for Mission and Ministry.
Completing his work in higher education, Father Reale moved downriver to New Orleans in January of 2012, spending 6 years as pastor of the Jesuit parish (Immaculate Conception) in downtown New Orleans, while also serving as the superior of the community of Jesuits living at Jesuit High School. During the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 academic years, he took on the role at the high school of Assistant to the President for Mission and Planning. He also taught 8th grade religion.
Since January of 2020, Father Reale has been primarily engaged in the ministry of Ignatian Spirituality, giving preached retreats and providing individual spiritual direction. He is a full-time staff member of the White House Retreat in St. Louis and, as of July 1, 2024, serves as the superior of the Jesuit community associated with that Jesuit work which was established over 100 years ago. Please note that assigned retreat directors are subject to change.
